The name has several variations, including at least Hoffart, Hoffert, Hofford, Huffard, Hufferd, Huffert, Hufford, and Huffort. Often a person would spell the surname more than one way over his/her lifetime. The spelling variations are meaningless.

Christian had 17 children -- eight sons, and nine daughters. The total number of Christian's grandchildren is not known; he had at least 102 grandchildren, but the information is not complete. Information is unknown for three of Christian's daughters (Hannah, Susannah, and Johanna Magdalena), and information likely is not complete for son Adam or daughter Anna Catharine.

Christian Hoffarth, was born 5 July 1716, in Schwaigern, Neckar, Wurtemburg, Germany. He died in 1788, in Monacacy Manor, Frederick County, Maryland.
He married twice and had children from both marriages.

Christian 1^st married Elizabeth KEIM. She was born Feb. 1723, Oley Valley, Berks County, Pennsylvania, and died before 1764. Christian's 1^st through 7^th children were the children of Elizabeth:

       (Susan's husband Enoch was the brother of Israel who married Susan's sister Elizabeth. Enoch had a daughter born in about 1841 to a slave woman. Thus, Enoch's daughter's status was that of a slave until after the end of the Civil War. The Emancipation Proclamations of 1862 and 1863 did not include the slave-holding border states of Kentucky, Missouri, Maryland, or Delaware, so it did not apply to Enoch's daughter. After the Civil War, Enoch's daughter lived in his home and used the LINK name.)

    There is a record in Frederick County, Maryland, showing that Jacob married on 15 Nov. 1799 to Catharine BAKER.
    However, according to multiple "mug book" biographies about Jacob, with information provided by his own children and grandchildren, Jacob's wife and the mother of all of his children was his first cousin Catharine CREAGER, daughter of Conrad CREAGER (b. 1735) and Anna Marie EADER. Conrad Creager was a son of Anna Christina Hoffarth, the sister of Christian Hufford, the subject of this genealogy list.
