Abraham Hufford and Elizabeth Plank

Abraham Hufford, Sr., was born in Frederick Co., MD, moved to Fairfield Co., Ohio, with his parents, and moved on to Carroll Co., IN, with his wife and children. He was Brethren, but he was also a veteran of the War of 1812. He owned 1,900 acres of timber land straddling Clinton Co., IN, and Carroll Co., IN. His deed to the land was signed by President Andrew Jackson, in the days when U.S. presidents signed deeds to land. As each of his 12 children turned 21, he gave the child 160 acres of land.

Abraham's christening record establishes him as his father's son. Abraham is featured on page 56 of The Hufford Family History, a book by Franklin Pierce Hoffert, published 1909. [Available in reprint from Higginson Book Co., Salem, MA.]

Please note: From about 2000 until early 2008, there was a photo on this page that was presented as a photo of Abraham Hufford, Sr. That information was wrong. It has been learned that it was a photo of Samuel Michael Dalton. The error and confusion began many years ago when there was a reunion of some of the Huffords in Iola, Kansas. Someone quickly assembled a booklet for the reunion, and the picture of Mr. Dalton was put into the book and identified as Abraham Hufford, Sr. The error was perpetuated.

Abraham's wife, Elizabeth Plank, was born in Allegheny Co., MD, moved with her family to Perry Co., Ohio, and moved on to Carroll Co., IN, as a wife and mother. Elizabeth was also Brethren. She is named in her father's will; her name was misread as "Elizabeth Hubbord" by an abstracter.

They were sons of Jacob PLANCK of Lancaster Co., PA, who was one of six sons of Frederick DeLaPlank, who was the only son of Dr. Jacques DeLaPlanch, who practiced medicine in Berks Co., Pennsylvania under the Americanized name "Dr. Jacob Plank." Dr. Plank was educated in medicine at the University of Basel, Switzerland, from 1696 to 1700.]
